Hello friend, I was thinking about things I knew and didn’t know before marriage and I thought i should share them with you. You’ll find them useful either you’re single or married, it’s a helpful information.
1)Prayer & Faith – As a believer and follower of Christ, prayer(which is conversations with God) is very important in our lives. The Bible says we should pray without ceasing, meaning prayer is needed at every stage and in every aspect of our lives. It’s a way of putting God first and believing in who he is. Marriage is a very important part of our lives and we need God’s help, wisdom and sovereignty.
2)Marriage requires effort- A good marriage is not automatic, it requires intentional efforts. You cannot be praying for a good marriage without being ready to put the necessary work in. Marriage requires unconditional love, patience, forgiveness, communication, compromise, sacrifice etc to make it work. What you sow you’ll reap, sow great things into your marriage so you can enjoy the fruits thereof.
3)Marriage is what you make of it- Marriage in itself is perfect, you make what you want out of your marriage. You cannot plant apple and be expecting to harvest mango, like the popular adage says “as you lay your bed so you’ll lie on it”. If you put good things into your marriage, then it’ll be good but if you put bad things into your marriage then…..
4)Your spouse is not perfect- Every individual is fearfully and wonderfully made but as we are born into this sinful world and we grow , we imbibe some habits/patterns that becomes a flaw or a weakness in our lives. Don’t have very high expectations, give yourself and your partner room for growth and learn from your mistakes.
5)Comparison kills joy – Don’t you ever compare your marriage to another, hehehe! Don’t do it. Just place your focus on your marriage, water it, sow love, pray and put your trust in God. Not all that glitters is gold, some are just gold plated, be happy for people, don’t allow envy or hate in your heart. Every good and perfect gift comes from God.
6)Forgiveness – You and your spouse are 2 different people coming from different backgrounds, with different habits, behavior, etc. Offenses are inevitable, you will have clashing views on situations, you’ll step on each other’s toes but remember your spouse is not your enemy, you’re on the same team. Forgive, discuss, pray, seek counsel and repeat process if you need to. Remember that your spouse is not your enemy, you’re on the same team.
7)Money – Money is important in life and this automatically make it important in marriage. In this world we need money for lots of things, food, shelter, clothing etc. So have a good source of income and plan your budget around it, don’t live above your means. Cut your coat according to your cloth.
8) God is the foundation of Every Good Marriage – This has to be the most important point because every other thing would be useless if the foundation is faulty. No matter how beautiful a building is, if the foundation is faulty then the building is automatically faulty and might not stand the test of time. Let God be your foundation, involve him from the very beginning of the relationship, do not lean on your own understanding, and expect him to dance to your rhythm. Don’t get into any relationship God doesn’t approve, quoting scriptures to console yourself, follow through with God.
9) unconditional Love is Impossible without God- The Bible says that that God is love, so it is impossible to love as God says if we don’t allow God teach us how to love. It is not a day’s lesson, we keep learning and become better until our final breath. Receive God’s love and in turn you’ll be able to express love to others.
10) Sex makes marriage sweeter- Just imagine how hotdog makes sharwama delicious, how whipped cream makes cake sweeter and how that chocolate filling in your doughnut makes it irresistible, you get the gist already. Enjoy sex with your spouse, it eases tension. Ok bye!
I hope you’ve learnt one or two things and if there’s anything else you think should be on this list please drop as a comment and we can all learn. I pray we all have godly and beautiful homes in and out. God bless you!
